The simulation is very fast and intuitive and can be baked once satisfied with the result in an instant. Trails are calculated in realtime, meaning all you need to do is create the motion for the trail controller or parent it to an already animated prop. Different builtin methods are either not very flexible or require cloth simulation, animation baking or other hacks to work. Sometimes the trail angels are unseen, but no less appreciated, like the hundreds of people who volunteer their time to maintain the trails, or the sweet souls who make handmade signs to point out an eagle’s nest.Trail effects usually take a lot of time to setup and require a lot of maintenance. “Trail angels” is the apt and affectionate name given to human purveyors of trail magic. Sometimes trail magic is being in the right place at the right time to meet just the right person – receiving a juicy orange when you haven’t seen a grocery store for over a week, meeting someone who makes and repairs their own outdoor gear just as your backpack tears at the buckle seam, or passing by someone who simply offers a smile or stops for a chat when you’re in need of connection. Sometimes it’s being in the right place at the right time to catch the sunset illuminating the trail or the sunrise lighting up a mountain pass. So often while I’m in the trail flow-state, I’ll notice I’ve changed my gait and look down just in time to realize that, instinctually, I’ve spared the life of an insect or small reptile. Or catching a walrus sunning ashore – a thousand miles south of its natural habitat – the day you set out to walk eastern Canada. Sometimes it’s being present for tiny moments of connection, like catching two insects, less than a half centimetre in length, touching antennae while riding the winds on a Prairie wheat head. To learn so many important lessons so early on… trail magic is like that!īut trail magic isn’t just the grand moments. ![]() I learned so much from that encounter – that “the trail provides,” especially as you grow more open to it that the trajectory of a day can turn on a dime and to follow insistent whims. In the coming days and months I often thought back to that encounter with Stan and Grace, and the insistent voice that kept me moving past exhaustion. That evening, after rinsing the day’s sweat and dust off in their shower, I joined them for dinner, complete with soul-filling conversation and topped off with – get this – treats from the Blacksmith Bakery! Trail magic! Trail magic!Īppreciating the awe-inspiring beauty of the Trans Canada Trail Grace and Stan, who had passed me in the red convertible, had a feeling I might be headed their way. Grace and Stan had been sitting around the fire with their sons and a gaggle of grandchildren, hoping I would show up. “We’ve been waiting for you,” Grace said as she got nearer, offering a wide smile. For a good ten minutes I made slow progress, spinning around every few steps, weighing the sanity of pushing forward in my tired state.Īs I walked on the trail alongside a fencerow bordering a freshly mowed property, I saw someone beelining towards me. I looked back, in conflict with myself, wondering why this spot wasn’t good enough. I turned my head, surveying the clearing again. I walked a few steps past the perfect spot, incredulous. I motioned towards the clearing but stopped in my tracks. By late afternoon I finally made it to the trail, thoroughly exhausted, slightly limping, and beyond grateful to find a perfect spot to set up camp only a couple hundred metres from the trailhead. ![]() I half hoped someone, anyone, driving by would save me from my self-imposed pain. A red convertible, top down, caught my eye as I sat steaming along a fence catching a bit of shade. In the morning, trucks and tractors plied the roads, traffic-flow slowing with the midday heat, giving way to the odd retiree out for a drive. I looked at my map again and again, inching closer to the spot that the road met the trail, willing myself on. ![]() I continued onward, stopping with increasing frequency as the heat and hard pavement wore at my resolve. My budget wouldn’t stretch six months if I stopped for every treat the Trail had to offer! ![]() I thought about picking up a pastry but quickly chastised myself for considering indulging so soon after I had set out. I stopped often, first in Fort Langley to ogle treats in the Blacksmith Bakery window. Personally, I like to pick the tool with the least amount of features. The key is just to pick one tool and limit yourself to that one thing to start. How does anyone decided where to start? And the answer is not to click through until or 6 in the results, that’s just ludicrous. A simple Google search for “writing app” brings up 359,000,000 results. The paradox of tools (and why basic is better) ![]() Whether that’s a friend or stranger somewhere else in the world, accountability can be very powerful. Plus, it’s human nature not to let someone down. For the $20–50 you’d spend a week having someone nag you, it might make you want to stick to your schedule more because you’re spending money on it. If you don’t have friends you want to trust with this task, hire a virtual assistant. If you don’t feel you have the willpower to let your calendar dictate your life, try finding an accountability partner for awhile. I’m in and out, with only the items I needed, and I can get back to work or back to time off from work. Plus, this little trick keeps me from buying extra things I don’t need (because that would take too much time). No one needs to spend an hour browsing the aisles. It may sound weird, but I only allow myself 30 minutes for a trip to the grocery store. (A screenshot of my calendar during the BuyMyFuture planning and build.) I block off time for writing, for strategy sessions, for customer support stuff, for life tasks (appointments, errands, etc), and I even block off time to NOT work. Heck, I used to even set times on my calendar to check email and social media (thanks 4-Hour Workweek). 90% of the events, however, have nothing to do with phone calls or meetings. There aren’t a lot of free hours in my day. My weekly calendar is filled with similar events. But I remind myself of the limitation I’ve set and stay focused. Of course I have moments where I can’t think of what to write next or I can feel the pull of social media. I put on some music that helps me focus while writing (Odesza and Pretty Lights). During that time my email was closed, Google Chrome was minimized, my phone was out of sight. For example, while writing this article I blocked off 1.5 hours. One of the best ways I’ve found to master my work output is to be very strict with my calendar. That trick is to set limitations on time and constrain yourself to focusing on only one task at a time. ![]() There’s a trick to getting in this ‘zone’ often. ![]() You know the zone right? That place where you just seem to be firing on all cylinders and to-dos get knocked off like falling dominos. Often times during the ‘squeeze’ we feel like we get in the ‘zone’. We feel the squeeze of a deadline and somehow manage to hunker down and get the work done just in time. It might seem counterintuitive, but I strongly believe that setting limitations and constraints can help you get through these mental roadblocks and finish your work on time. It’s a dark place to be in, but there is a solution. You fall into Workload Paralysis: You stress about all the work that needs to be done to the point of needing an escape, only to come back and see even more work to be done. You have too many things racing around in your mind and instead of buckling down and getting to it, procrastination is at an all-time high. There are times when you feel like you just can’t get any work done. As long as you are truly pushing and working towards progressive overload then your body will progress with you to build muscle and increase strength. The goal here is to try and to make sure it happens EVENTUALLY. Maybe it happens a month into your program. For example, increasing weight lifting repetitions or the speed at which you run over the course of time. Instead of going up 10 lbs, maybe you’re increasing 2.5 lbs. Progressive overload means challenging your muscles and body by gradually increasing the stress put on them. If you are an intermediate or advanced lifter, your body may take longer to adapt to new training stimulus, or your increases may need to be smaller. This is one of the reasons why we describe strength training as a skill. This is more-so due to neurological adaptations & learning to recruit the muscle fibers that you already have. If you are a beginner and you have mastered your form, you will experience what we call “newbie gains.” You will probably be able to increase weights every week. Rates of strength gains will vary based on many factors, so there isn’t a cookie-cutter approach to how frequently you should increase weights. How often should I be increasing weights if I’m trying to implement progressive overload? ![]() This workout principle increases demand for muscle size, strength, and endurance. ![]() We progressively increase the training stimulus over time as your body adapts and gets stronger. Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress during training. This continues year after year, the content you are learning gets progressively more complex, but YOU also get smarter in response to this progressively challenging stimulus. That also feels hard at first, then you practice and learn it and it feels easy. The following year you learn multiplication and division. At first it’s a hard concept to grasp but then you learn and practice it and it starts to feel easy. An example of the overload principle is when one increases the weight of equipment lifted in a resistance training plan. You start with simple addition and subtraction. The overload training principle refers to an individual adding workload to their current exercise regimen in order to improve fitness. ![]() When you’re 8, you don’t start out with calculus. With regards to presentation, as I had alluded to before, a lot of care was put into making sure this was a die-hard fan's game. The PS2 version of the game doesn't support any sort of DLC, so it actually includes a couple more songs from Death Magnetic than the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. The band's stage presence has been greatly transferred to the game. I'm sure everyone will have their personal favorites, but the available songs read like the quintessential "Best Of" track list for the band. ![]() Still, those seem to be the only two major tracks that I'm sad aren't here. ![]() My only complaint in the song selection department is that "Blackened" and "…And Justice For All" don't appear here, likely because of their availability as DLC for Rock Band. You'll find at least a couple tracks from each of the band's first five original albums (up through the Black album), with a scattering of stuff from the latest four, which is great news for long-time fans. As for the song choices, the tracks span the entirety of Metallica's career, pulling titles like "Seek and Destroy" and "Whiplash" from Kill 'em All, all the way up to "Broken Beat and Scarred" from Death Magnetic. Lars' drumming also turned out to be incredibly fun, offering up cool bass work with some thundering toms here and there. Plenty of fast power cords, blistering solos, melodic breaks that don't bore you to death and just awesome riffs all around. There's just something about the way that these guys play their stuff that translates really well to a plastic guitar (if that makes sense). Speaking of the tracks, as I mentioned before, the set list here is absolutely killer, not only in terms of song quality but the overall enjoyment level with respect to actually playing them as well. Also, it means that you can almost skip right past the early stuff and quickly get to the big tracks, like "Master of Puppets" and "One", if you really want to. Though it presents less of a challenge and winds up taking away a little of the reward for beating some of the game's hardest songs (like Slayer's "War Ensemble"), it's nice to know that you won't get caught up having to repeat the same track over and over to progress. Obviously there are incentives to go back and play everything else in the name of unlockables and so forth (including the band's instruments), not to mention fun, but it's unlikely that you'll get stuck unless you choose a difficulty that's way over your head. I actually "finished" the game after having only beaten 40% of the songs, so there's a ton of leeway in allowing you to move on if you get stuck on something. Rather than the gig-based progression from World Tour, you'll find something much closer to the original two titles where it's a tier-based system, but instead of having to beat each song in a tier to progress, you need only meet a total star requirement. The title is a full-band game, just like Guitar Hero World Tour, so guitar, bass, drums and vocals are all part of the mix. While the game isn't as immense as the franchise's yearly big update, and while it generally sticks to the same tried and true formula of past releases, there's just a feeling of care taken with the experience that makes it a must-play for fans of the band and metal in general.Ĭlick the image to watch the video review. The track list is stellar, the presentation is top-notch, the band is very well represented, and, perhaps most surprising of all, there's a ton of stuff for fans of the band to check out.
